Sudarso’s artistic journey began in Bandung in 1937, where he honed his skills alongside renowned artists Affandi and Barli. Raised in a village as a “carik,” he nurtured a passion for drawing, often emulating the iconic wayang kulit characters. After graduating from Arjoena School in Ajibarang, Central Java, in 1931, he supported himself through the late 1930s by selling eggs and milk in Bandung. During this period, he crossed paths with Affandi, a pivotal encounter that fostered his artistic growth.
Revered for his distinctive depiction of rural women set against scenic landscapes, he skillfully captured their psychology – modest, genuine, and rooted in reality. Often portraying seated subjects, his exceptional portrayal of hands and feet garnered recognition from Affandi, affirming Sudarso’s mastery.
